An Unexpected Surprise & a Good Read

Good Afternoon Luv-lies,

Had a fun-filled weekend (read – ate a little off program :/ ).   Stayed mostly on, but I must admit that I strayed a little…. *just a little*  🙂  Didn’t make to my usual Weight Watchers meeting place to weigh in (that’s usually done on Sunday) because the festivities started waaaaay before the meeting time!  Needed Monday to recoup * come on!  You know how that is…. right?*

Went in today for this  weeks weigh in…. couldn’t find a reallllly good excuse reason to hold out any longer … to this VERY welcomed surprise!

 DOWN!!!   1.6 WHOLE POUNDS!!

Didn’t really expect that!  Although I ate a ‘little’ off program, most of my hedonistic indulges were either fat laden and/or salt ridden.  With that in mind, I approached the weigh-in with the mindset that “… I know that I gained something! …. I just hope that that ‘something’ is just a little bit…”

This kinda surprise … I like !!   This kinda surprise … I can do !!

And to think that I was seriously trying not to be accountable this week by skipping the weigh-in  *there’s something to be said about your conscious getting the better of you!*

Just think I would have missed on the ‘Scale’ Celebration, getting my first #BRAVO sticker for #WeightWatchers’  ‘ACE Your Summer Challenge’, getting the ‘#WeightWatchers’ Weekly’

Non Scale Victories!!!

Non Scale Victories!!!

….. and picking up this gem of a magazine that is always chock-filled with loads of great articles and even greater *delish* recipes!!

Put Your Feet Up.... It's Saturday !!!!

Put Your Feet Up…. It’s Saturday !!!!

Good Morning Luv-lies,

Happy Saturday…. hope that your week has been a productive and rewarding one.

I tell you, for me, this week has flewn by – like a flock of birds heading south for the winter!   It’s been a week of mostly goods and ……. not so goods  okay, so when it wasn’t good, it was reeeealllly bad!

Well, let’s get to it…..

The Week’s ‘Good’ Stuff…  {starting with the most important first :-)} :

My Little Ones.... Luv Them Babies

My Little Ones…. Luv Them Babies

Spent almost two hours video chatting with my three Grands…. affectionately referred to as ‘My Little Ones’.  I LUV them babies!!!

My six year old granddaughter (that’s her with the awesome make-up on the left) read me a story from one of her favorite books.  That was amazing!  While she was reading, I had a ‘light bulb moment’.  She was really reading! Not from rote, but, really reading with passion and emphasis.  WOW!!  She is growing up so fast….

Her oldest brother, my four year old grandson (he’s the one with the amazingly infectious smile on the far right side of the picture), also growing far too fast, sang me his rendition of  the ‘ABC’s’.  It took some coaxing – I had to sing it first… incorrectly.  He was in and out of a few small tantrums during the chat.  My silly rendition of the ‘ABC’s’ helped him out of it…  Besides, I he’s so proud of himself when he done.  And, of course, I am major scale proud of him!  I have a feeling that reading is on the very near horizon…. Yey!!!!!!

Then there is my youngest of the bunch (he’s the cutey in the middle).  He’s two years old but I swear that he’s been here before.  If he were just a little taller, one would think that he is the oldest.  He takes over! And, I have a sneaky suspicion that because he’s the youngest, his brother & sister let him take over –  but not for too much longer!  He likes to be the ‘holder of the phone’.  Because he talks in ‘two year old speak’ most of the sounds that I hear while he’s holding the phone is heavy breathing.  He’s soooo damned cute!

During most of this, my daughter was preparing dinner.  So I got to be the ‘virtual’ babysitter (hey! how did that happen? :-0).  But most importantly, I had a chance to visit with my family, who I miss soooo much!

More Goods!!!

My Weight Watchers Dashboard

Seven months of Weight Watchers and commitment to moving my arse has rewarded me in several ways.

I’m down 0.4lbs {that’s 15lbs closer to goal}

Several garments that have been hanging in my closet – still with price tags and size tags (of a smaller size than I was seven months ago) – now fit –  with plenty of extra room – Whoa Hoo!!!

And most, inspirational and humbling….  at work, a few of the Ladies have been very complimentary (and forthcoming) with compliments on the amount of weight that I have lost and how ‘good you look, girl’.  Their compliments have been, among other things, encouraging and flattering.  They have been so inspired, that, we have decided to form a support group where we focus on healthy weight loss and healthy lifestyle.  They have appointed me as the mediator of the group.  Again, I am truly humbled and flattered.  There will be loads of posts about this group…. can’t wait to get started!

More Good Stuff !!!

I ran 36 miles this week!!!

I ran 36 miles this week!!!

This week, I’ve run a total of 36 miles!!! YEY ME !!!!!!!!!

Ohhhhh   Soooooo   Baddddd   Stufffffff !!!!

Im' Out of Control!!!

Im’ Out of Control!!!

I over ate !!!!!!  Yes! that was reallllly bad…. but not until Thursday.  And only on  Thursday !  I usually don’t touch my 49 Weekly Points that the WW program allows, but, not only did I eat my allotted points, I ate ALL of the 49 Weekly Points – In One Night!!! …..  whhhhhaaaaat!?  …… riiiiiiiight!

I did recover on Friday.

And the plan today is to STAY ON PROGRAM!!!

……… That’s my week, Luv-lies,

I’m Stuck ! … 4 Down & Dirty Strategies to help get you through that Dreaded Plateau

Diet_Plateau_cartoon

It’s happened to the best of us.

For weeks you’ve been true to your program – eating clean, getting in your workout, staying hydrated & getting your sleep on.  Every week that you step on the scale, you see the pay-off for all of your hard work.  Then one day, without so much as a warning, the number on the scale stops moving in its customary downward direction!

‘No Problem’ –  you think to yourself, that first time – ‘… at least it’s not a gain…’

But in the weeks to follow, the pounds of fat that once seem to effortlessly fall off are clinging on like a stubborn mule.  You do a personal inventory of reasons that could be contributing to the sabotaging of your success…. again, you come up short with viable reasons for this stall…. arrrghhh!!

You knew that this day would come.  You’ve read about, you’ve even overheard locker room conversations about it.  But when it happens, there is still the questions of ‘why me?’, ‘why now?’, ‘why the hell does this happen?’, and ‘how the hell do I get past this!?’.

According to the folks at the Mayo Clinic –

A plateau occurs because your metabolism — the process of burning calories for energy — slows as you lose muscle. You burn fewer calories than you did at your heavier weight even doing the same activities. Your weight-loss efforts result in a new equilibrium with your now slower metabolism.

At this new equilibrium, calories eaten equals calories expended. This means that to lose more weight, you need to increase activity or decrease the calories you eat. Using the same approach that worked initially may maintain your weight loss, but it won’t lead to more weight loss”

If you’re at a plateau, you may have lost all of the weight you will, given the number of calories you’re eating each day and the time you spend exercising.   At this point, you need to ask yourself if you’re satisfied with your current weight – in which case you move on to the maintenance phase of your journey  or if you want to lose more – in which case you’ll need to adjust your weight-loss program.

weight-loss-plateau (1)

If you’re committed to losing more weight, before you throw your hands up and throw in the proverbial towel, here are 5 Down & Dirty Strategies to try for getting past the plateau:

#1     Reassess your habits.

Review  your past  food and activity records.  Make sure that you haven’t loosened the rules, letting yourself get by with larger portions or less exercise.  Calorie Creep (a.k.a. – eating more calories than you think)  combined with decreased metabolism (from the weight loss) almost always results in a plateau.

#2     Re-evaluate Your Calorie Intake

As you lose weight, not only does it become harder to lose, but your metabolism decreases.  – the good news is that your metabolism is supposed to decrease as you lose weight.  Because at your new leaner weight you have less body mass.  Less body mass =  Lower energy requirement to support your smaller frame.  A general rule of thumb, when looking at caloric intake is, for every 10-15 lb you lose (especially if you have a lot of weight to lose), you can reevaluate the amount of calories needed to continue on your weight lost journey.

#3    Rev up your workouts

If you want to maintain the results you have, changing things up in your work out is awesome!  But not if you want to maximize your results in a muscle building, or fat loss program.  Continuity in your exercise program is more important than switching things up.  Continuity allows you to track your improvements in your strength and fitness levels – making adjustments to your workouts.  Think outside the gym. Increase your general physical activity throughout the day by walking more and using your car less, or try doing more yard work or vigorous spring cleaning.

#4     Get a Good Night Sleep

The people at Fitday sums it up this way:

“Sleep is a crucial factor in losing weight. Sleep suppresses your appetite and raises your metabolism, while allowing your body to rest and recover. Sleep affects the levels of several hormones in your body. Two hormones that play an important role in stimulating and suppressing your appetite are leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is produced by your body’s fat cells and is responsible for suppressing hunger. Ghrelin is released by your stomach, and stimulates your appetite. Lack of sleep lowers the levels of leptin in your blood and heightens the levels of ghrelin, which results in an increase of appetite. The reverse is also true: getting enough sleep decreases hunger and will therefore help you lose weight. So aside from leading an active lifestyle and maintaining a balanced diet, you should also make sure that you get enough sleep to carry you through your day”.

As you continue on your journey to reach your ideal weight, keep in mind that changing your body into a lean, mean fit machine is the destination. Find as much enjoyment in the journey, despite its setbacks.  Revel in the small successes that seem to be overlooked – the stronger and fitter you, your vanishing waistline, making healthier food choices, to name a few.  Learn to appreciate and focus on these changes, while continuing to work your healthy lifestyle changes, and your plateau will become well-earned fodder for your blog.

Hello Luv-lies,

Happy Sunday…

Great News from the ‘Green Seats’ !!!!

Major celebration today…..

I’VE REACHED MY HALFWAY POINT TO LIFETIME GOAL!!!!

((((YEY ME)))) !!!!

Five months into this re-commitment to a healthy, physically fit lifestyle, I am elated with the news that I am twenty-five pounds (that’s 50%) closer to my goal weight.

The Meeting Leader asked me to share what I attributed to my success. Now, I’m not one that is talkative during our half hour meetings- instead, I prefer to quietly benefit from the group offering; however, with what seemed to be all eyes on me, offered this small tidbit of my success….

…. to what do I owe this success….
Ownership & Commitment *period*

I’ve finally owned the fact that I am solely responsible for living a healthy, fit lifestyle. And that no matter how many fitness magazines, dvd’s, fitness programs, that I watched…. No matter how much I wished for a toned, curvy, cellulite-free body…. Until I committed to the change that I sooooo longed for, I would forever remain in my fitness ‘dream’ world!

….. and VOILE’…. 25 pounds down!

So Luv-lies, ……to what do you owe your successes?

WEIGHT…! That’s The Wrong Direction…!!

126dcf5c22a84fee9b308b89cd984ea2_2

Good Morning Luv-lies,

I’ve been absent for a minute…. just a brief minute 🙂

I’m sure that this has, or will (at some point in your journey) happened to you….
you’ve been tracking, getting in enough physical activity to smile *widely* about,… just plain ol’ working ‘The Program’.

You know, successfully on your way to that pot of gold at the end of this proverbial rainbow. When….. everything, either, comes to a screeching halt! or/and the weight seems to be creeping back on….’GO FIGURE’ ! 😦

I knew that I was not going to be special enough to escape the always spirit-breaking ‘plateau’, but boy I darn sure was not ready for it this soon!!!

“I JUST CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I’VE BEEN SPINNING IN CIRCLES FOR THE LAST FOUR MONTHS! … YES!!!! FOUR WHOLE MONTHS!!!
….please accept my apologies for yelling….* demure smile*

Our friend, Alzabees over at “My Little Pumpkin Muffie blogged about it, not once but twice…. and I still was not ready for the deflation that must be part and parcel of this whole ‘plateau-ing’ thing….

Now, I have not spent the last two months brooding ~ only the last two weeks….
After about three days of attempting to figure out the possible reasons that I’m in stall mode, I decided to focus on some things about the last two months that have been, well, quite fruitful.

So here is ‘The Fruit’ among ‘The Stall’:

* My arms, thighs, calves and abs have become much more toned

* The tuning of the above muscles have resulted in a total lost of almost 10 inches

* I am down two more dress sizes…. *yippee!!*

* I am a half shoe size down (that equals one whole size since starting the program
…..does that mean I get a new pair of ‘Choos?’)

* My family’s, friends’ and co-workers’ compliments are almost followed by..
“…. girl you’ve gotten small enough…” (…. and I’m literally at the halfway
point in my journey!!! YEY! ME)

* …. and overall, I must say that I ‘I feel MAH-VA-LOUS’

So I guess the lesson to self is to find the sunshine in every plateau… because standing still has its perks….

Have you reached that plateau? How did/would you handle it?

Smart Snacking

Hello Luv-lies,

Remember growing up when you were told that snacking between meals would guarantee, not only spoiling your next meal, but would definitely help to pack on the pounds? Well…. you’ll be glad to know that, healthy snacking not only curbs your appetite- making the next meal a welcomed dining experience –  but it aides in weight loss by quelling the urge to overeat.

*HaHa! How’s that for great news!?*

As we all have discussed, at some point, while occupying the ‘green seats’, that PLANNING IS KEY! A planned snacks, liked planned meals, makes it a no-brainer when you need to grab something nutritious to hold you over until the that next meal and makes it easier to control and stick to your allotted portions. So what makes a snack, a snack and not a treat?

apple snackWell, this is my understanding of the difference between these two seemingly same ideas.
A snack is a nutrient-rich meal that serves to sustain you until your next meal...Food for survival.

Where a treat is a reward… something pleasing to eat because it is rare or a luxury…..Food for your soul.

So what makes one a smart snacker?

I have a few….

* Snack only when you’re hungry
Many other feelings may disguise themselves as hunger: Boredom, frustration,
anger, happiness, loneliness…. Just about any emotional you can think of. When
the urge comes to eat to an emotional, channel that energy into doing something
physical – stay one more hour in the garden, bowl one more game, walk one
more mile….

* Watch, both, Points Plus and Nutrient Value of your snack choice
In a word {or more}, all Point Values are not equal. Enough said.

* Plan your snacks ahead of time
We’ve learned this again and again during the meeting. One little ditty that
I’ve learned from the members of my group is to mark point values on
food containers. I love this one because when I’m in a hurry, I don’t have
look up the point value. Just grab and go!

These are just a few things that I do to assure that I am snacking wisely and healthily. You should always make room for healthy snacks in your meal planning. Choosing them carefully will thwart the urge to overeat and assist with your weight loss success…

What tips do you use that help you with incorporating healthy snacks into your eating
plan?

Anchors… & ‘… you mean I can’t eat a whole cheesecake?

8de0218188ce47da8c641f789a1948af_2

Hello Luv-lies,

It’s been a few days since we’ve talked {major bummer :-P}. So what’s been going on in your world? How’s the program going? Any challenges? Successes {of course}? Do share….do share.

So this week’s topic was about anchors. I forgot to bring my ‘anchor’ to share with my fellow ‘green seat’ luv-lies {and of course, I wanted to melt into the ground! Everyone else had managed to remember ‘their’ anchor…Whoa hoo!}. As I listened intently to the objects/episodes/experiences and comments that was just the motivation that my fellow ‘green seat’ Luv-lies needed to make the commitment to start living a healthy lifestyle…. minus the unwanted pounds. What is your anchor? What was the objects/episodes/experiences and/or comments that made you say ‘…that’s it! the weight has to go!…’?

Even though I did not remember to bring my anchor, the comments from, both, the Leader and the ‘green seat’ Luv-lies made me begin to ponder my ‘anchor’. What was the objects/episodes/experiences/comments that drove me to finally say
“That’s it! I deserve to live a healthier lifestyle! I deserve to feel great when I’m shopping for that seasonal wardrobe!…?” By the meeting’s end, I had realized that my anchor was that I had been blaming my weight gain and subsequently, the inability to take off the weight to having a child. What’s the problem with that? I’m sure you’re asking yourself. Lots of women gain unwanted pounds while carrying a bambino! The answer would be – nothing is wrong with gaining a few {unwanted} pounds while growing a child… UNLESS… that was an experience that happened thirty years ago!!!!

YES!!! My one and only offspring is now an intelligent, warm, loving thirty year old mother of three wonderful children! That being said, with much resolve, on January 1st 2013, I committed to stop blaming my unknowing, loving Daughter for my lack of taking control of my unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle.
I’m sure that she will be glad to relieved of that fifty pound weight ! 🙂

…. AS FOR THAT CHEESECAKE …

Blueberry Cheese Cake

So it’s that time during the meeting that we celebrate our ‘losses’… YEAH!!! I’m a little quiet about sharing my ‘loss’ successes. So I was surprised to find out that I had, again, reached another five pound weight loss! Whoa Hoo!!! Not being the only ‘biggest losing green seat’ Luv-lie, the Leader, after giving out all of the BRAVO stickers, asked the group how we celebrated our ‘losses’.

There were several ways that many of us ‘green seat’ Luv-lies rewarded our great efforts at taking off the pounds… getting a mani/pedi, nonfood shopping trips, new outfit… just to name a few. We were on the right track encouraged our Leader. We seemed to grasp the concept of rewarding our wins {or losses} with nonfood kudos. It was then that she told us the story of a meeting that she conducted; in which, one of the green seat Luv-lies’ intention, when she reaches her goal weight, is to “hurt a buffet”…OUCH!!

When I reach goal weight, I’m sure that I won’t be putting a “hurting on anybody’s buffet”, or downing a whole Oreo Cookie cheesecake!

I’m opting for a full mani/pedi…….

What’s your anchor?

How will you reward your goal weight success?
Do share, Luv-lies…

Just Call Me a Flying Karamazov

Hello Luv-lies,

As you well know, the road to a healthy, successful weight loss (and maintenance) is not one void of roadblocks, detours, red lights & right of ways.

For me, one of the many challenges HAS NOT been meeting the activity piece of the program. I have Jazzercised, competed in Spinning class fundraisers, participated in a multitude of aquatic workouts and presently have found great pleasure in Pole Fitness. So, when invited by a friend to try-out an Aerial Fitness class, I thought “why not. This sounds fun and fascinating!

So dressed in my usual yoga-style attire, I awoke early  Saturday morning to meet her for my first seventy-minute aerial workout. I dare not have my usual breakfast and coffee prior to this challenge (WARNING-UNABASHED VERBAL VISUAL::goodness forbid that my breakfast make a spontaneous and impromptu appearance on the floor of the studio. (I would have been horrified!). Our drive to the studio consisted of a nonstop prep (and pep) talk about what I could expect once reached our destination…. that the class would take us through standing and seated poses, inversions and balancing postures – all using an aerial hammock suspended from the ceiling (by two hooks!). More eager than ever, we finally reached our destination. And the fun began!
Fast forward two hours later…. back in the car (and now on our way to lunch…yes! I survived and was famished and ready to eat) with great enthusiasm, I shared with my friend – who was excited to hear about my new experience. Initially I didn’t really ‘know’ what to expect, but I was elated with the lightness that came with soaring through the air in an almost defying gravity manner! I had not anticipated, but now welcomed, the ‘clearness’ of mind that the resulted from the many inversions and poses. So refreshing and liberating!
The workouts help with flexiblity and agililty and builds core and upper body strength. The are many mind and body benefits that result from this type of workout and for those reasons I will be soaring through the air again

…..like a flying Karamazov.

The Karamozov Brothers

Besides….It’s a great way to blow off steam and release stress! 🙂

What new work-out have your activity list?

Hey!! Take Your Foot off of My Scale

1e621dab01da4ecdab637e9c2f92dcfe_2

Hello Luv-lies,

I awoke this morning  in a relatively good mood – the weather is great, looking forward to a great workout (although a couple of hours away, still looking forward to moving this body to the rhythmic sounds of a Zumba class!), planning a great meal (new recipe for a spinach salad. …I’ll post the recipe soon :-)), – just relaxing and catching up on the leisure things (read… the stuff that keeps me sane) in my world.

But first, my Sunday begins, as it has in the last six months with an early morning weigh-in.  Over these four months, I have eagerly looked forward to stepping up on that scale – after disrobing to the bare legal minimum of clothing (come on…you know what I’m talking about, right?). Now I know that I was a “little bad” this week, but I was not prepared for the 2.4 pound weight GAIN!

There I stand in utter disbelieve….whhhhaat!! 2.4 pounds! WTW! {What The What!}. Well…. it took me a minute to step down off of that ‘awful’ scale – how dare it say that I’ve gained!. But once I re-donned my shedded clothing (perhaps I should have kept them on… then I would have something to, immediately, blame it on 😛 ), I took my place in the ‘green seats’ to receive the leader’s message on the topic of the week – Be a Tracking Pro. While sitting there, my mind couldn’t help frequently drifting back to the dreaded 2.4 pound gain and thinking how does the weekly topic pertain to my earth shattering bad news!

Somewhere during my self-indulgent drift back to my ‘bad news’ I begin to hear the message in the weekly topic. And as I tuned in and listened more to the Leader and my fellow ‘Green Seat Luv-lies’, I realized that one of the major tools that had brought me so much success in the beginning –TRACKING- I had neglected to implement (not just this past week, but for several weeks! … There I’ve said it! … Woosah…..).

After the meeting, I quickly made inventory of all of the (unwritten) food infractions that impacted this week’s gain….and they were many

Revisiting last week’s food intake made it very clear to me that I:

(1) must become a Tracking Pro, again,

(2) must move forward and not be bogged done in the gain and beat up on myself, but, learn from this experience, and

(3) celebrate what I DID RIGHT this past week

Clint Eastwood... You did it right =)Two of which are ::

Eight workouts – at the fitness center that I am a member – in 7 days.   I’ve started morning workouts – via My Wii- before going into work. In the past week, I’ve gotten three mornings in!

And, I live with my ActiveLink on my side.   According to it, I have met my daily activity needs 96% of the time this week  {YEY ME!!!},  Even though my ‘back’-tracking and the scale has served to snatch me back to the reality that the program tools do/can work, my ActiveLink has patted me on the back for a stellar physically active week!

I am eagerly looking forward to a better week!

What have been your program challenges?

I Luv to hear your thoughts…. Do Share
