Menopause is A Real Bee-Yotch!

Good Evening Luvlies,

In a lot of ways, I am truly happy that I have been blessed to live in this day and time.  Now don’t get me wrong, there are times that I get super peeved about some of the shenanigans that I read about and/or encounter.

But today was not one of them.

Why? You ask.

It was my trip to the gym this evening that has me grateful for living in ’these times’.  No, it wasn’t the updated, state-of-the-art equipment that reigns second, only  to the rock hard bodies of the eye-candy that strolls proud as a peacock, displaying hours of their hard work for all to ohhh & ahhh over , but instead the honest, no-holds barred conversations that seem to occur spontaneously, while waiting for the class ahead of mine to end.

The conversations don’t happen on a daily, but every now and then I’ll be patiently waiting beside another woman who just needs to get some ’stuff’ off of her chest…

… today was ‘that’ day…

The conversation started off innocently enough.  You know, the normal pomp and circumstances – “how was your day?”, “couldn’t wait to get to class today”, “I really need this workout tonight”.    You know, all of that kind of stuff….

With all of the niceties out of the way, I made a general comment to this ‘Zumba Sister-friend’ about the temperature in the gym…

and the following conversation ensued….

20131112-234241.jpg

Zumba Sister-Friend (feverishly fanning herself):  Girrrrrrl!  You think it’s nice in here?…. I’m hot as hell in here!

Me: (raising my brows in surprise, wondering where the conversation was going) Oh Yeah?  It feels pretty good to me…

Zumba Sister-Friend (continuing the frantic fanning) : Can I tell you?, since the start of this menopause thing, I get hot as hell!!!  All I want to do is ‘cold down’.….. I want anything ice cold!…. a tall glass of water with a ton of ice cubes spilling over the rim, a fan with a gazillion over-sized blades, an Alaskan glacier, all of the snow on the North Pole!… anything to ‘cold me down’

20131112-234341.jpg

Me: (pleasantly surprised at her candor and secretly appreciative of someone who understands my daily visits to ‘hell’): Don’t I know it!  And it just comes on all of a sudden! No ‘just between us girls’ kinda warning! No ‘you need to get your arse ready, because I’m on my way’ heads up!  NOTHING! Just…. BAM!  One minute you’re good and the next minute – all bullshinanigans break out!!!  All you want to do is climb out of your clothes!

20131112-235224.jpg

Zumba Sister-Friend (pointing in the direction of the free-weight area): My Husband doesn’t know what to make of it.  Most of the time, I’m as sweet as apple pie.  But when that inferno reigns down on me, I’m like a friggin’ hungry grizzly who hasn’t eaten in four weeks…and there’s no food insight for days!  This menopause thing is a real bee-yotch!

Me (nodding my head indicating that I am fully aware of her struggle): Don’t I know!  And the thing is, I’ve always heard the b!tching about the flashes – that feeling of standing with your feet nailed to the floor, while opening the oven door on Thanksgiving Day!  Has anyone told you about the exxxx-treme cold that follows!!  I’m talking about the bone-chilling, ‘where’d that heat from that damned flash that I had a minute ago!”  – COLD.

20131112-234325.jpg

… To the delight of me and my Zumba Sister-Friend, the conversation continued like this for, at least, another ten minutes.  Both of us quietly grateful to know that we really aren’t crazy… just going through some basic shiggity and tom-foolery that has come to define this developmental stage of our lives….

And when it finally came that time to ‘get our Zumba on’, we strutted into the class like twenty-somethings without a care in the world…..

And, as I said earlier, It’s not every day that

iNspIRation: WorkOut *Bling*

Good Morning Lu-lies,

The temperature here has been dropping daily *yikes*.

Being a  ‘hot weather person’, I thought that having to bring my running game inside would cause me to lose interest, but, so far it has not happened !!!!

I am certain that my perception of fall/winter running is probably not as bad as I think  the monsters in my mind have me tripping over pebbles, running too far and not having enough energy to run back, running out of water, having to stop to use the restroom – and not having one readily available….

But until I conquer the crazies, I’m inside.

In my efforts to be proactive about this whole staying focused thing, I’ve decided to go trolling for some new fitness gear.  Hey You, no judgment 🙂 … a girl’s gotta have a reason to shop, right?

This is what I found    *some of it is sparkly*

This little gem is probably not practical, but I do luv the *bling*, *bling*.  This is some kinda of special if you luv to sparkle while you sweat.  Not to mention being a sucker for glitz!

sparkle nike

Found this really cool hand stamped necklace.  This piece is great as a gift for a personal trainer or as an inspiration for the newbie – like me!

Running the 5K inspired me to work toward running a half marathon next year…. YES!!

The plan is to run, at least one, half marathon.  *throwing confetti in the air for inspiration* .  Perhaps this little baby will keep me inspired and less focused on the craziness of this new found goal.

half marathon crazy

I figure that with all of this training, I’m going to need something to rock all of those medals.  What do you think?

I reeeallly ❤ the crown on this one… a lot

Well Luv-lies,  this shopping spree could go on forever, so I think I’ll stop with these rocking pieces.

So, what inspires you?

What’s In Your Food?

Good Morning Luv-lies,

I love gadgets!!   Show me an electronic gadget, I’ll show you a gal that’s in e-heaven!!!

Kitchen gadgets, office gadgets, clothing gadgets…. it just doesn’t matter.  If it’s a gadget, I’m sold.

New on my gadget list of  ‘I Want That’ is this baby pictured below.

It’s handle is the ‘Tellspec’ and its claim to fame is that with a wave of the hand, it can calculate all the calories,  ingredients, chemicals, and allergens in all types of food.

WOW” !!!  Imagine that!

The concept is the brainchild of a the young daughter of an entrepreneur and math professor, who was plagued by food allergies.   The story  is that one evening, while having dinner, the youngster picked up a flash drive and proposed a device that, when pointed at food would be able to calculate it’s content.  *From the minds of Babes*

Here’s the video, to fill you in on the details.  I must warn you, though, there is a short segment that gets very scientific.

Well Luv-lies, if you’re anything like me, right now you are the edge of your seat waiting, breathlessly, for me to tell you where you can be one of the first to get your hands on one of these luv-vah-lies!  Here’s where I break it to you gently….

…. this product, is not yet for sale.  Actually, the two inventors are in the process of working out the kinks, raising funds, and talking with optical companies who might be interested in manufacturing this little gem.

Until then, I’ll stand in line with you guys and hope that it will be available soon –  in pink 🙂

What gadget can you not live without  – real and/or imagined?  *wink*

#Movember … What’s this All About?

20131106-153845.jpgHey Luv-lies,

Good Morning to you all.

I am sooooo excited about this being the month of November!  Yes, yes.  I know – It’s #NaBlogPoMo  Month!!  Don’t get me wrong, I am super stoked about that…

Whaaaat!?  … being able to hob-nob with all of the fabulousness in one divine blogosphere community….  can you say

 ‘FAB – U- LOUSSSSS‘?!

Well it seems that November is the chosen month for many a celebration.  I think that I know which one is coming to mind, right about now.  But. No, No.  It’s not Thanksgiving (I’ll have a post about this holiday for Culinary Divahs and Food Lovers very soon).

Then ‘What can it be?’ you ask  *gently scratching one’s head with a well-manicured nail*

This month is officially,

MOVEMBERRRRRRR!

What? Oh What? is this thing called Movember?

In the words of one NYC journalist,  simply put, Movember is a fundraising initiative where ….

“….. thousands of men around the world said goodbye to their clean-shaven upper lips and braced themselves for awkward stubble. Movember, a global initiative that has grow mustaches during November to raise awareness and money for men’s health, is now officially under way….”

It’s been several years since the birth of this initiative (founded by an Australian gentleman),  Movember  has become an official charity with global reach.  The vision is to have an impact on men’s health that rivals that of breast cancer awareness.

There are Three Basic Rules:

1~    Start on November 1st clean shaven

2~   Grow  your ‘Mo’  (Australian for ‘moustache’) for 30 days

3~     Raise Awareness and funds for Men’s Health

It’s that simple…

Need the backstory?

Check out this video….

Through the power of the Mo, vital funds and awareness are raised to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

So Luv-lies,

Will you ‘Mo’ this month?

Hey Luv-lies!,

I confess!

Despite all of the recent hoopla that this juice has generated……
I luv! luv! luv! fruit juice! In a smoothie, over ice, on a cold day, and especially when it’s oven hot outside!

So, needless to say, I was overjoyed when, during one of my many runs to the coffee shoppe, I discovered ‘Naked’ Juice. At 3 PointsPlus per serving (that’s per 8 ounces) , and described as a ‘Power Garden. Packed with Veggies. Downright Delicious.’, this tasty palate pleaser doesn’t fail to delite.

Want more juice smoothie options? Our own ‘Hungry Girl’ has done a great blog post... Check it out 🙂

One Mile Timed Trial…. {a.k.a.} ‘Just hobble me now!’

one mile timed run

Good Morning Luv-lies,

I wanted to share this with you guys on last Saturday

but

simply forgot….

Very early Saturday morning, (did I say very early?),  I started my first practice module for  my second C25K.    I ran my first 5k about six years ago on a whim.  I knew then, like I know now, that shear ignorance and adrenaline contributed to a successful finish (under 30 minutes).  I ‘practiced’ for this run for all of a week *goofy face*

This time, I’ve chosen to be smarter….

So, after one hour of a combination of nonstop warm up, strength exercises and sprints, the group (I think that I’ve mentioned ‘The Sisters’ before),  we gals were charged with

one last task…

the one timed trial….

This is what I Tweeted and Facebooked {is there such a verb} after all of the torture!

I’m Stuck ! … 4 Down & Dirty Strategies to help get you through that Dreaded Plateau

Diet_Plateau_cartoon

It’s happened to the best of us.

For weeks you’ve been true to your program – eating clean, getting in your workout, staying hydrated & getting your sleep on.  Every week that you step on the scale, you see the pay-off for all of your hard work.  Then one day, without so much as a warning, the number on the scale stops moving in its customary downward direction!

‘No Problem’ –  you think to yourself, that first time – ‘… at least it’s not a gain…’

But in the weeks to follow, the pounds of fat that once seem to effortlessly fall off are clinging on like a stubborn mule.  You do a personal inventory of reasons that could be contributing to the sabotaging of your success…. again, you come up short with viable reasons for this stall…. arrrghhh!!

You knew that this day would come.  You’ve read about, you’ve even overheard locker room conversations about it.  But when it happens, there is still the questions of ‘why me?’, ‘why now?’, ‘why the hell does this happen?’, and ‘how the hell do I get past this!?’.

According to the folks at the Mayo Clinic –

A plateau occurs because your metabolism — the process of burning calories for energy — slows as you lose muscle. You burn fewer calories than you did at your heavier weight even doing the same activities. Your weight-loss efforts result in a new equilibrium with your now slower metabolism.

At this new equilibrium, calories eaten equals calories expended. This means that to lose more weight, you need to increase activity or decrease the calories you eat. Using the same approach that worked initially may maintain your weight loss, but it won’t lead to more weight loss”

If you’re at a plateau, you may have lost all of the weight you will, given the number of calories you’re eating each day and the time you spend exercising.   At this point, you need to ask yourself if you’re satisfied with your current weight – in which case you move on to the maintenance phase of your journey  or if you want to lose more – in which case you’ll need to adjust your weight-loss program.

weight-loss-plateau (1)

If you’re committed to losing more weight, before you throw your hands up and throw in the proverbial towel, here are 5 Down & Dirty Strategies to try for getting past the plateau:

#1     Reassess your habits.

Review  your past  food and activity records.  Make sure that you haven’t loosened the rules, letting yourself get by with larger portions or less exercise.  Calorie Creep (a.k.a. – eating more calories than you think)  combined with decreased metabolism (from the weight loss) almost always results in a plateau.

#2     Re-evaluate Your Calorie Intake

As you lose weight, not only does it become harder to lose, but your metabolism decreases.  – the good news is that your metabolism is supposed to decrease as you lose weight.  Because at your new leaner weight you have less body mass.  Less body mass =  Lower energy requirement to support your smaller frame.  A general rule of thumb, when looking at caloric intake is, for every 10-15 lb you lose (especially if you have a lot of weight to lose), you can reevaluate the amount of calories needed to continue on your weight lost journey.

#3    Rev up your workouts

If you want to maintain the results you have, changing things up in your work out is awesome!  But not if you want to maximize your results in a muscle building, or fat loss program.  Continuity in your exercise program is more important than switching things up.  Continuity allows you to track your improvements in your strength and fitness levels – making adjustments to your workouts.  Think outside the gym. Increase your general physical activity throughout the day by walking more and using your car less, or try doing more yard work or vigorous spring cleaning.

#4     Get a Good Night Sleep

The people at Fitday sums it up this way:

“Sleep is a crucial factor in losing weight. Sleep suppresses your appetite and raises your metabolism, while allowing your body to rest and recover. Sleep affects the levels of several hormones in your body. Two hormones that play an important role in stimulating and suppressing your appetite are leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is produced by your body’s fat cells and is responsible for suppressing hunger. Ghrelin is released by your stomach, and stimulates your appetite. Lack of sleep lowers the levels of leptin in your blood and heightens the levels of ghrelin, which results in an increase of appetite. The reverse is also true: getting enough sleep decreases hunger and will therefore help you lose weight. So aside from leading an active lifestyle and maintaining a balanced diet, you should also make sure that you get enough sleep to carry you through your day”.

1-weight-loss-secret-how-to-overcome-the-dreaded-weight-loss-plateau

As you continue on your journey to reach your ideal weight, keep in mind that changing your body into a lean, mean fit machine is the destination. Find as much enjoyment in the journey, despite its setbacks.  Revel in the small successes that seem to be overlooked – the stronger and fitter you, your vanishing waistline, making healthier food choices, to name a few.  Learn to appreciate and focus on these changes, while continuing to work your healthy lifestyle changes, and your plateau will become well-earned fodder for your blog.

Hello Luv-lies,

Happy Sunday…

Great News from the ‘Green Seats’ !!!!

Major celebration today…..

I’VE REACHED MY HALFWAY POINT TO LIFETIME GOAL!!!!

((((YEY ME)))) !!!!

Five months into this re-commitment to a healthy, physically fit lifestyle, I am elated with the news that I am twenty-five pounds (that’s 50%) closer to my goal weight.

The Meeting Leader asked me to share what I attributed to my success. Now, I’m not one that is talkative during our half hour meetings- instead, I prefer to quietly benefit from the group offering; however, with what seemed to be all eyes on me, offered this small tidbit of my success….

…. to what do I owe this success….
Ownership & Commitment *period*

I’ve finally owned the fact that I am solely responsible for living a healthy, fit lifestyle. And that no matter how many fitness magazines, dvd’s, fitness programs, that I watched…. No matter how much I wished for a toned, curvy, cellulite-free body…. Until I committed to the change that I sooooo longed for, I would forever remain in my fitness ‘dream’ world!

….. and VOILE’…. 25 pounds down!

So Luv-lies, ……to what do you owe your successes?
