Find Your Balance : Snack Smart

Hello Luv-lies,

This is interesting.

Art Bananas

Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes. But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

DEPRESSION

bananas help depression

According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

ANEMIA High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

BLOOD PRESSURE: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

BRAIN POWER

bananas help brain power

200 students at a Twickenham school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

CONSTIPATION High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

HEARTBURN Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

MORNING SICKNESS Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

MOSQUITO BITES: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

HANGOVERS

bananas good for hangovers

One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

NERVES Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.. Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

ULCERS The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chroniclercases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL Many other cultures see bananas as a ‘cooling’ fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around so maybe it’s time to change that well-known phrase to, “A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!”

I’ve Got Lunch All Wrapped Up

Hey Good People,

Just got in from veeeery relaxing and cleansing body flow yoga class.  Even though this is the fourth weekend doing the routine, I never grow weary of discovering the limits that I can comfortably push my body.   After a great workout, I made this great dish to refuel myself :

veggie wrap

Basically, I threw avocados, tomatoes, shredded carrots & beets, lettuce, an assortment of mushrooms, onions, green/red/orange peppers.  Added a smidgen of cheese – goat & parmesan.  Sprinkled in a pinch of ground pepper & a dollop of white balsamic vinegar.  Stuffed all of this deliciousness into a large Veggie Wrap.  Popped it into the microwave (just enough to melt the cheese and warm the veggies).   Added a side dish of Jicama.  And Voila’!!!!  I’ve got lunch!

Can I tell you that it smells as good as it looks!   #Yumlicious!

What’s for lunch?

do tell ……

Friday Food {Porn} :: Fried Ice Cream

Good Morning Luv-lies,

Finally Friday! Right?  Not a bad week for me.  How has your week been?  The weather continues to be frightful, but one thing for sure is, with each passing day, the temperature outside should be warmer & warmer. *I sure hope that Punxsutawney Phil is correct*  So, with thoughts of the warmer weather to come, I thought that I’d feature a dish that honors both, the frigid temps that we’re experiencing now & the much anticipated warm stuff that’s some to be….

Fried Ice Cream big%20red%20fried%20ice%20creamIt’s  little perplexing for me to wrap my head around ice cream being fried!  Who would of ‘thunk’ it?  Who did ‘thunk’ it – shear genius!   This I definitely have to try.

Have you tasted or created this decadent oxymoron of a treat?

[Recipe]: Feta & Veggie Frittatas

Hello Luv-lies,

Just a quick post this afternoon.  I posted this picture, on my Facebook Page,  of a very easy and super delicious,  Feta & Veggie Frittata breakfast. After a super intense work out this morning, I couldn’t wait to dig into this!

veggie frittatas

One of (the many) reasons that I luv! luv! luv! Frittatas is that you can kinda dump all kinds of veggies right into the egg white base.  I luv to mix in tons of veggies!  I try to include veggies that have vibrant colors (like peppers, spinach, scallions).  The colors add a little ‘eye-candy’ kind of appeal to the look.  And the extra nutrition isn’t all that bad either.   I also play around with different herbs and spices (I’m veeeerry light-handed on the salt, though).  The aromatic scent of the combo of fresh veggies, cheese & spices in mouth watering!   This meal is one of my many ‘go to’ meals that is pleasing on the eye, delish on the palate, and sparing on my time.  All great reasons to put this in your recipe rotation!

My decision to write this post came at the request of TaVona Boggs  {click the link the follow TaVona’s Fitness Journey on Facebook} – a woman who I have the pleasure of sharing membership in the – Femme Fitale™ Fit Club.   Actually, she only requested the recipe.  I thought, ‘this might make a great post’.  So, at Your Request TaVona, below is the recipe {Thanks so much for your interest and feedback.  This is one of the beauties of social media – the ability to share good stuff with incredible like-minded people!}

1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper  *I also use red pepper as well*

1 cup artichoke heart   *as an option you can use frozen or canned artichoke hearts* – cut in chunks

1 cup crumbled feta cheese  *sub you fav!*

1/2 cup chopped roasted fresh red peppers

1/2 cup sliced uncooked scallions

1/4 cup low-fat cream cheese (room temperature)

PREP::

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Coat two 8-cup muffin pans with cooking spray

In a medium bowl – beat eggs, egg whites, water, salt/herbs and pepper until well blended

Stir in spinach, artichoke hearts, feta, roasted peppers, scallions, and cream cheese; mix well

Spoon approx. 1/4 cup egg mixture into each prepared muffin cup.  Bake until just set, about 18-22 minutes.  Cool in pans on a wire rack for at least 5 minutes.  Loosen edges of frittatas with a rubber spatula, sliding spatula underneath frittatas to loosen bottoms and lift them out of pan.  Serve warm.

Whew! What a January….

Hey Luv-lies,

Whew! I’m sooooo glad that February is here!  Now I’m not one who usually wishes for my days to go by rapidly, but January was a real bear!  Not just for the crazy weather. But for some reason, last month, the scale has for some reason stopped being my BFF.  I successfully got through the holiday unscathed!  Not a pound to be gained!  As a matter of fact, I reached goal someway between the latter part of December  and the New Year.  (Yes!  Smack dab between the Christmas and New Year holiday.  I lost AND reached goal)!  Talking about being on a high.  Ahh. Yeah.  So of course, going into January my thoughts were, ‘Humph! I successfully got through the  endless barrage of  holiday delights & treats, six weeks of maintenance shouldn’t be thaaaat hard’!  Now don’t get me wrong, in no way did I then, or do I now, think that at any time, this lifestyle change is ever a piece of cake {pun intended}.  But I was fairly confident that I’d get through the six weeks of maintenance at best, uneventfully.  And what with the unveiling of The Simple Start Program rolling out at the start of The New Year, I thought – ‘No Brainer.  Two weeks of  Power Foods.  No tracking.  I can do that. Right?’   NOT!

So what the hell happened!?

burt

I followed the two weeks of The Simple Start Program.  Continued to run five days a week – averaging twenty-five miles a week.  Even made a ‘2014 New Years Inspiration to complete one half-marathons this year. *aside – I’m pretty much on track {woo. another pun.  Not intended this time :/} with this*.  And then there were the Zumba Classes that I live for – to the tune {uh-oh. another pun.} of at least five to six times a week!  With all of this compliance, I wasn’t too concerned when the first two weigh-ins of the month – of the year!, for that fact – were the same.  No loss.  No gain.  Perfect.  That was a welcomed ‘plateau’ because,  I was into maintenance, after all.  Fast forward (or should that be ‘fast forward backwards?’) to the last two weeks of January.  Not. So. Good.  Why?  Yep! You guessed it.  Although there was no change in how I was ‘working the program’ – I stayed on The Simple Start  for the last two weeks of the month (why not?… I didn’t gain….  Until week three…) only, I added a (light. very light) weight training regime to the mix.   Those last two week weigh ins ….

wham bam pow

Gain!!!!  Yesssssss!!! Gain!!!! {forgive me for yelling so loudly.  I am fuming!}  To the tune of a total 3.6 lbs!!  First things first.  with this much gain, I’ve totally blown the criteria for continuing on my maintenance journey *heavy sigh*.  That’s a bummer.  Needless to say, I HAD to share my not-so-good-news with my fellow members in this week’s meeting.   And true to form, the support that I received from my fellow members was uplifting and reassuring.  They reminded me of the non-scale successes that I have achieved and reminded me that, with the addition of a weight training regime (even a very light one) I’ll be sleek, toned & trimmed just in time for bathing suite season.  And that continued adherence to this lifestyle journey is, in and of itself, commendable.  I thank my fellow group members for their understanding and honesty….we’ve come to be to do that for each other.

My take away on the whole matter …  its’ about perspective.  Focusing on the successes.  Celebrating the achievements.  And remaining steadfast in one’s goal despite difficulties and/or delays in achieving success.  If I had to put it in a word….. Persistence

What’s your take on this?

{MAN}Day Monday: 6 reasons that The Broncos wished they hadn’t played in Super Bowl XLVIII

Good Morning Luv-lie,

How about Super Bowl XVLIII?!   Full disclosure, usually when I watch the Super Bowl, it’s mostly in anticipation of  the new commercials.  It seems that companies really pull out ALL of the stops.  And they didn’t disappoint (the commercials, that it).  What was a major disappointment; however, was the fact that the Denver Bronco’s didn’t show up for the game!   In as few words as points that Denver scored, the sports headline for today is :  ‘The Broncos: Orange Crushed!’

As a recap, here are 6 Reasons that The Broncos wished they hadn’t played in Super Bowl XLVIII:

1.  At the start of the game, during the coin toss, ‘Broadway’ Joe couldn’t contain himself long enough for the referee to get an answer from Seattle as to whether they wanted heads or tails.  Come on Joe, the temperature was 49 degrees and no snow to be seen …. for miles!

Namath-Coin-Toss-Super-Bowl-48

2.  The fastest score -[12 seconds] – in Super Bowl history happened when the Broncos gave up a safety on the first offensive play of the game.  *BLINK* *BLINK*

Broncos-Safety-first-play-Super-Bowl

 3.   Equation for Success:   Seahawks’ defensive end Cliff Avril gets all up in Manning’s grill & hits his arm [causing a botched pass] +  Seahawks’  linebacker Malcolm Smith being in the right place, at the right time – that seemed to be the case for  the Seahawks the entire game  *side eye* – and intercepting the pass = a 20 yard Seahawks’ touchdown with just under three minutes left to play in the first half.  Nothing like going into the locker room with a 22-0 score at the biggest game of the season (I’m just saying)

Peyton-Manning-Pick-Six

4.   Second half of the game opened with Seahawks’ first round pick, Percy Harvin returning a short kick for 87 yards – and a 29-0 score at the start of the third quarter.  Nothing like Special Teams showing their ass too!

PercyHarvinTDReturn2ndHalfSB

 5.  The Whiz running Buffalo Wild Wings’ Twitter account sent this ‘Tweet heard  ’round the Twitterverse”.  Might as well ‘do you’.

Screen-Shot-2014-02-02-at-11_10_20-PM

6.  Not granting any post-game interviews, Seahawks’  Marshawn Lynch’s postgame locker room dance said it all!  I ask, “what’s a celebration if there’s no Victory Dance“?!
